Description: HISTORY OF TH’ GATHERIN’

The village of WaKeeney, Ks. population about 2,000 plus is located on the 100th meridian exactly 1/2 way between Kansas City and Denver.

Our village is just a little over 100 years old, settled primarily by immigrants from about 5 major regions in the Old World. All of the regions at one time were occupied by a tribal agricultural society known as the Celts. As long as anyone can remember this village has celebrated the first day of May. In the past under many different names, e.g. The First of May, May Days, Celebration of May, May Daze, Captain Trego Daze, etc., but by 1996 May pole dancing and decorating and giving May baskets and flowers, had disappeared .

So in 1996 a group of citizens felt it was time to take this festival back to it's original roots. They called themselves, Na Cumann na Aos Dana, in the ancient Irish tongue, the society of “people of letters”. In doing research they discovered that our immigrant fathers were not the first people to have a "Gatherin" on this land. They learned that before our coming the original people used this very spot where th’ Gatherin’ is held today as a Gatherin spot every May. Calling the tribes together for feasting dancing and games. Tribes were called from the Arkansas River in the South, the Platte in the North, the Missouri River in the East and the Rocky Mtns to the West.

For those of us that live close to and depend upon the earth, May 1st is an important day for it is at that time we can see and feel the earth stir and come alive with promise after the long dark winter. It was always the most important day of the year for our ancestors. Before recorded time, they divided the year into two halfs. A dark and a light half of the year. May 1st, Beltane, the first day of the year that moves into the light half of the year.

So it was that May Daze was reborn as the Fire Festival O' Beltane, Th Gatherin.

In honor of the original people. We used their boundaries and called it the Realm of Trego. It is a Gatherin of the descendants of all of those ancient lands in the Old World from which we are descended. It is a festival to bind us all under the common tartan and to discover who we are, how we are, and why we are here on this land.
